Edge Economics: Useful Intelligence Without Cloud Dependence
VScreen is designed to make acoustic poultry monitoring practical for farms where connectivity, compute, and budget are constrained.
Where the edge model creates value
Lower infrastructure demand
Knowledge distillation transfers useful behaviour from a larger Teacher ensemble into a lightweight LSTM Student model. The result is better suited to a farm smartphone, local computer, or low-cost edge device.
Offline-first operation
Audio can be analysed near the flock instead of continuously uploaded to a remote service. This reduces dependence on reliable rural internet and helps keep routine monitoring available during outages.
Earlier action, less waste
Timely signals can help farmers and veterinarians prioritise inspections before respiratory problems become severe. VScreen is decision support, not a replacement for clinical diagnosis.
A practical deployment path
Capture
Microphones or a phone collect flock vocalizations in the farm environment.
Extract
Acoustic features such as MFCCs, spectral measures, zero-crossing rate, and RMS energy summarise the signal.
Classify
The Student LSTM produces a health classification locally and can surface a prompt for follow-up action.
Connect when useful
Results can later be synchronised with dashboards, veterinary workflows, or IoT systems when connectivity is available.
Explainability keeps the economics responsible
Lower hardware and connectivity costs matter only if users can understand and appropriately act on the output. VScreen's feature-based pipeline creates an interpretable link between flock audio, acoustic indicators, model predictions, and the decision to seek veterinary attention.
The system is intended to support a human-led workflow: a prediction prompts investigation, while diagnosis and treatment remain with qualified professionals.
